May 30th 2025, I will never forget this date, was the day that my Belgian friend Jan suddenly passed away during his Sunday dive. A friend who helped me where he could, with sculptures and my art studio. Every Sunday he would go scuba dive and sometimes to clear his mind, he would do a very deep dive of 60 plus meters. Often I would invite him to join me to church, but as he would also tell his girlfriend: The sea is my church. Well, that Sunday indeed he went to see the Lord as something happened that was fatal. What exactly, we will never know, or maybe one day he will tell me. Meanwhile at the location where his body was found, a memorial that I made in his memory is placed. This was a request from his parents and sister, who I hold dearly to my heart. His parents happened to visit 6 months earlier that year. Jan used to work in construction, he laid concrete floors as a core business. For that reason I made the memorial from concrete, more than 100 kilo's in weight. It got a special treatment, the concrete is mixed with sea sand to not affect the ocean too much. It's also built in a way that corals and other forms of sea life can grow in and on it. And that life continues, both above and under the surface of the sea.
